AIM Hiding

AIM Hiding, what is it?

If you were to ask me, and since you are still reading this, I will assume you have, I would tell you that AIM hiding, is setting your AIM* client to “invisible.” This “invisible” status makes you appear to be offline when you are really online. You can still chat with people, and other people can send you messages, but they would have to take a shot in the dark that you are even online.

So Why AIM Hide?

This is a question I have asked myseld many times, and also one many have asked me. While I don’t know for sure, I might be some deep psycological issue, I will attempt to explain my motivation for it.

One reason, possibly the safest reason, is I like to leave my AIM client (I actually use GAIM*) on whenever my computer is on, but because I often times leave my computer on, and step away from it for long periods of time (hours), I dont want someone to IM me and then think I just don’t want to talk to them, when in reality I am not there. Of course, I could use an away message, but I am anti-away message, so that would be unexceptable (more on my be anti-away message at a later date).

Another reason is I sometimes want to work on something without being bothered. Not that any of my friends are a bother. So If I don’t want to be bothered, why am I online? good question, you. I want to feel in the loop, I guess. I mean, what if everyone I know is online having some kind of online party, and I miss it? I just can’t take that chance.

So the only logical choice is to AIM hide.

But now that I’ve told everyone, my secret is out. So if you are online and bored, try sending me a message, Im probably online.

*AIM : AOL* Instant Messanger
*GAIM: GAIM is WAAAAY better than AIM. It has no ads, runs faster, and its nicely cutomizable, I highly recommend it.
*AOL: America Online

It’s about time you explored your estranged “hiding” behavior. Hmm, “some kind of online party”. I suppose I can relate this in that I won’t go to a party unless I know most of the people who are going to be there. So, to make an analogy, you want to see who is online before you commit to “going online” yourself…..?
It’s hilarious you posted this…i forgot all about it!
