Gmail vs. Yahoo Mail
February 7th, 2007
I recently signed up for a Yahoo! mail account after receiving an email from Flickr (who is owned by Yahoo) informing me I would need to get a Yahoo! ID by March 15th in order to continue using Flickr. I had a feeling this was coming since finding the login page for non-Yahoo members was becoming a fun Where’s Waldo like game.
I had been putting getting the Yahoo ID off for so long because my previous Yahoo ID, netbrad_2002, I picked out in high school and was beginning to show its age. I knew trying to get a decent username would be a challenge since all the good ones would be taken so late in the game. Even my obscure brodrigu was taken. After running through a few names I decided on webrad (pronounce web brad, not we brad). It wasn’t great but it was short, and sweet, and the a little better than brd_rdrgz1984, which was Yahoo’s suggestion.
After signing up for the Yahoo! ID I was asked to try out Yahoo! Mail. I was curious as to what Yahoo mail had to offer, so I bit.

I was impressed by the interface, Yahoo knows what they are doing when it comes to coding. Their choice of advertising however, counters their nice interface making my eyes scream out in pain.

By contrast, GMail has no advertisements on its inbox page, and has only “relevant” text ads when reading a message. Since I spend most of my time with my inbox open, I prefer not to be distracted by bright large advertisements. Google was smart not to push gaudy advertisements into our faces, and are very popular because of it.
Yahoo is on the right track, but Im not giving up my Gmail anytime soon.
