Fantasy Basketball Anyone?

October 1st, 2007

After trying out Fantasy Football this season, and so far not doing so well (I’m not a huge pro football fan), I decided I would have more luck with Basketball. I also figured it would be more fun in a league with people I know, bringing a little more competition and bragging rights at the end.

If anyone is interested in joining my Yahoo! Fantasy Sports league click here.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Movie Film for Theaters Intro

September 10th, 2007

I just watched the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie, which was good if you like ATHF, but if not then it might not be for you. It’s completely random. However, I think the opening scene is particularly hilarious, especially if you like hardcore / death-metal. Watch for yourself:

I know this is the third video I have posted this week, and no I did not just discover YouTube.

Casey Alexander: SpongeBob SquarePants Emmy Nomination

September 8th, 2007

Spongebob Squarepants was nominated for the Emmy, Outstanding Animated Program for Programming Less Than One Hour, for the episode “Bummer Vacation” which my cousin Casey Alexander wrote and directed. Although “Bummer Vacation” lost to a very worthy South Park episode, “Make Love, Not Warcraft”, I thought I would share “Bummer Vacation” with you all, as I think it held its own against the other nominees and is in my (possibly biased) opinion the best episode of Spongebob I have ever seen.

Back in La Puente

September 5th, 2007

sign

I have been back home in La Puente for a few weeks now, so this post is a little late. I didn’t want to write about being back until I had been back long enough to get semi-settled and take it all in.

The best word to describe the last few weeks would be”transitional.” I have gone from being in some of the biggest cities in the world where I only really knew Simon, my traveling buddy, didn’t speak the language, and constantly moving and traveling to living, and working, at home.

Things are, not surprisingly, a lot different than I remember them. My aunt recently passed away really quickly after finding out she had breast cancer, and her death has had a huge impact on my family. Everyone is trying to do all they can to fill the gap the loss of my aunt has left in the lives of her two young daughters.

I have spent most of my time getting my sister Whitney ready to start school at CalArts, and trying to find a place for myself back home. I will hopefully be able to , after some redecorating, move into my old room recently vacated by my now undergraduate sister.

I have gotten a few chances to hang out with some old friends. It’s interesting to me how friendships grow and die over the years. Seeing some friends who you used to be really close with is awkward and feels really forced. With other friends you can pick up where you left off, feeling like no time has passed at all. Perhaps the most surprising are friends you hardly knew at all, who you find yourself getting along with as if you had known them well all along.

It is not just people, and relationships that have changed, the city has changed as well. Stores have closed, malls have been remodelled, and it seems like all the trees have been cut down.

How long I will be home has yet to be determined. I am currently working on a web application from home until December on a contract with UC Davis. I hope to have found a career position by that time. I am looking both in and out of the Southern California area, so this could just be a short stay, or become my home for many years to come.

The IT Crowd Season 2

September 3rd, 2007

I just watched the first two episodes of the new season of the IT Crowd, and it was hilarious, even better than the first season. If you’re a fan of the first season I highly recommend checking out the second season, and if you havn’t seen it at all you should give it a chance, I don’t think you will be disappointed.

You can stream online at TV Links

Not moving to London

June 26th, 2007

I finally heard back from Last.fm about the job in London on Monday.

Unfortunately, it would be to costly and time consuming to obtain a work permit for me to work in the UK so I will not be moving to London.

While I believed (and still do) that Last.fm would have been a good fit for me, and would have been an awesome place to work, I think I would rather be home for a year or so spending time with my family before making any more huge moves. London is a great city, but I miss California.

I really think that whole process was a positive one. I got the opportunity to meet some of the Last.fm guys, got a real interview under my belt, and learned a little about myself in the process. With all the startups in California, I am confident I can find another organization that I will be as excited to work for as I was for Last.fm.

Myspace: Time to move on.

June 22nd, 2007

Don’t you love how its nearly impossible to read some peoples Myspace pages because the background picture is visible through the transparent boxes?

Isn’t it cool how random hot girls who you don’t know constantly send you spam friend requests?

It’s a testament to Myspace’s awesomeness that even the owners of 23″ wide screen monitors still cannot view most Myspace pages from left to right without scrolling.

Why shouldn’t Myspace remove third party widgets, and pictures hosted on other sites such as photobucket (before they bought it)? I mean this is there site, you the user don’t have any say on what content you can add to it?

If you disagree with any of these statements, you might be ready to move on. Myspace was cool at first because it allowed us to connect with current friends and meet new ones, while also allowing us to express ourselves through god-awful use of (mostly computer generated) CSS. Myspace opened the door to social networking for many of us, but there is a whole new world of social networking out there and chances are, most of your friends are out there too.

facebook is an excellent alternative. It has many of the same features that Myspace has, but more importantly it has a clean interface that lets you connect with friends, without the unnecessary headaches and seizures that usually accompany a trip to a friends profile on Myspace. In addition, facebook has recently launched the f8 platform that actually promotes third party developers to create their own applications or “widgets” giving you, the user, far more choices for content on your profile than Myspace ever did. This means if there is something you think is missing on facebook, you can creat it, and you won’t be blocked, banned, or served with a notice from Rupert’s Lawyers.

I have considered leaving Myspace altogether, and indeed I may in the near future, but I thought I would share my feelings of Myspace’s inadequacy with you all in hopes that when I leave I can take many of you with me.

Just try facebook out, it might not be for you, but chances are it is.

My facebook profile is here, add me as a friend.
